Physicians with Expertise in the Diagnosis and Management of Alpha-gal Syndrome

Once you have been diagnosed with AGS, you may find that your physician is less familiar with AGS than you had hoped. Below are lists of:

  • The experts on alpha-gal syndome
  • Physicians recommended by experts

Make an appointment with one of them, if you can. If you can’t, there is a second  list of patient-recommended physicians.

You can also ask for recommendations in the Alpha-gal Support Nonpublic Group or from a member of the Emotional Support Team.

Dr. Scott P. Commins, MD, PhD

UNC Allergy & Immunology Clinic
6013 Farrington Road, Bldg 200, Suite 300
Chapel Hill, NC 27517

984.974.2645

Dr. Commins sees patients in the UNC allergy clinic and maintains an active research laboratory. His primary research and clinical interest is the recently described red meat allergy. This unique food allergy appears to be brought on by tick bites and can develop at any time throughout life, even after many years of enjoying beef, pork or lamb. Patients develop an allergic response to the sugar alpha-gal and the resulting allergic reactions are often delayed 3-6 hours after eating mammalian meat. Dr. Commins often sees patients in the allergy clinic with difficult to diagnose food allergies or allergic reactions.

There are conflicting reports about whether Dr. Platts-Mills is seeing new patients.

Thomas Platts-Mills, MD, is a professor of medicine and microbiology at UVA. Dr. Platts-Mills joined UVA’s faculty in 1982 and has served as chief of the Allergy division since 1993. He has also served a term as president of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (AAAAI). In 2010, Dr. Platts-Mills was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society for his research into the causes of asthma and allergic disease. The Royal Society is the United Kingdom’s national academy of science and the oldest scientific academy in the world. Only a small number of fellows are physicians, and Platts-Mills is the first allergist ever elected. His election was based on more than 30 years of research on the role that dust mite, cat and cockroach allergens play in the development of allergic disease and asthma. Dr. Platts-Mills led the team that discovered and described AGS. He also wrote Diagnosis and management of patients with the alpha-Gal syndrome.
